Recently, JK Rowling got into trouble for posting on her personal page an article on Devex titled: “Creating a more equal post-Covid-19 world for people who menstruate”. Devex’s article mentions the risk of shortages of medicine, sanitary napkins… affecting women’s health, causing them to have trouble during their menstrual periods. Devex uses the phrase “people who menstruate” to discuss this issue.

However, J.K Rowling suggested using words derived from women such as “wumben”, “wimpund”, “woomud” … to replace the phrase “people who do not menstruate”. She was criticized for discriminating against transgender people by saying that only people who menstruate are women and equating women with menstruation. A wave of criticism erupted with many people saying that to determine whether a person is a woman or not, one cannot rely solely on having menstruation as a criterion.

J.K Rowling spoke up to explain that she always sympathizes with and supports transgender people. The accusations that she hates transgender people and discriminates against them are absurd. She continues to write essays on her personal page to express her views.
