Toronto Maple Leafs struggle in second period, fall to St. Louis Blues 4-2 (Credits: IMAGN)
The Toronto Maple Leafs fell to the St. Louis Blues 4-2 on Saturday night, a defeat that showed their struggles in the second period. Colton Parayko stood out for the Blues, scoring two goals, while Jordan Kyrou also found the net. Pavel Buchnevich added an empty-net goal to seal the victory. Blues goalie Jordan Binnington played a crucial role, making 35 saves to secure the win. This victory marked the end of a three-game losing streak for St. Louis.
The Maple Leafs started strong, with Marner scoring the first goal and the team outshooting the Blues 12-4 in the first period. However, they failed to maintain that energy in the second. A pivotal moment occurred when Blues defenseman Philip Broberg exited the game with a lower-body injury after colliding with Marner.
After the game, Mitch Marner reflected on the team’s performance, noting that they turned over the puck too often and allowed the Blues extended time in their zone. He said:
“We turned over the puck quite a bit, gave them a lot of offensive zone time, gave them power plays, got them rolling.” [1:57]
Chris Tanev also shared his frustration and said the team played poorly in the second period, unlike the first. He said:
“We played an awful second period. … did the opposite (of a good 1st period) in the second. We let them play in our end the whole time and let them score goals, changing the game in about ten minutes.” [4:59 mark]
The Blues scored three goals in the second, changing the game’s momentum.
“I think we kind of took our foot off the gas a little bit, and this is a good league. You can’t take any team for granted. They scored a few quick ones on us, and then we were behind the eight ball.”
The Maple Leafs will next face the Minnesota Wild on Sunday as they strive to rebound from this loss.
Toronto Maple Leafs’ sent two players to the AHL amid inconsistent performances
Just as the Toronto Maple Leafs were beginning to find their rhythm, they suffered a disappointing loss to St. Louis Blue, raising further doubts about their consistency. They now have a 6-5-1 record in their first 12 games. However, the team has shown signs of improvement as they adjust to a new lineup and a fresh goaltending duo.
The Leafs are also looking to add experience by utilizing veterans in supporting roles. Defenseman Jani Hakanpaa and forward Connor Dewar were both signed to bring depth but have yet to play this season due to injuries. On Friday, the team sent Hakanpaa and Dewar to the AHL’s Toronto Marlies for conditioning, allowing them up to three games to get back to game speed.
Hakanpaa, 32, is in his first season with Toronto and his sixth in the NHL. He’s played 288 games with other teams and is known for his strong defense. Dewar is entering his fifth NHL season and second with Toronto. Originally drafted by Minnesota, he has played 190 NHL games.
