The teacher also took the opportunity to joke: ‘This is why we run girls’.

Nikki soon appeared on BBC Breakfast on Wednesday morning to describe her surprise encounter with one of the biggest British stars.

She described it as ‘so random’ and ‘surreal’, recalling how she had been on her first run in several months, when she heard music and spotted a ‘ginger man’ who ‘looked like Ed Sheeran’.

On realising it was in fact the hitmaker himself, she said: ‘Inside I was in complete turmoil and in my head, the time it took me to ask for a song was a really long time, I am so shocked that it was that rapid when I saw his video.

‘I literally ran out onto the path, sort of waved at him, then he asked me for a song request. In my head, I was thinking, “Oh my God, I need to think of a song now, it needs to not be a rubbish or basic one – not that he has any rubbish songs obviously!”‘

Nikki explained she had decided on Tenerife Sea, as it had been one of her personal favourites after she saw Ed perform it live when she was younger.

Explaining her quick thinking in capturing the unexpected moment, she said: ‘I feel like it almost looked like I planned that and I was ready for it.

‘But genuinely in my head, I was thinking, “Oh my God, he’s actually singing to me, I’m not going to remember this if I don’t film it! I’m going to black out and not know what’s going on!”

“In that video, it looks so rapid that I pulled my phone out but I was just like, “Oh my God, Ed Sheeran singing to me, I need to record this!”‘

Ed’s impromptu performance to Nikki comes only a week after he delivered another heartwarming surprise performance in Cyprus to the British troops, earlier this month.

The musician delighted the military personnel and their families stationed at the Dhekelia Garrison rugby pitch when he dropped by for a surprise visit and intimate acoustic set.

He was already in the country for the final two dates of the highly-anticipated tour, but made sure the armed forces got a free show of their own.

Organised by the British Forces Foundation (BFF), the day saw Ed shaking hands with the soldiers, and handing out autographs and selfies.

However, the real stand-out moment was when the talented father-of-two took to the stage and played some of his most-loved songs for the crowd of around 200 people.

A video clip showed Ed walking onto the stage to overwhelming applause and cheering, before he performed his hit single Perfect and the crowd joined in.

Heartwarming footage showed the thrilled reaction of the attendees, with one little boy appearing to say: ‘His song Perfect, me and my mum always used to sing it and we’ve got him to sign it. She always loved Ed Sheeran.’

He then help up a pillow that featured the lyrics of the song, which has now been signed by Ed himself.

While one mother in the crowd added: ‘It’s just such a special opportunity for everybody to come together. All of us out here, especially with the children.

‘They obviously go through a lot of moving and to have this opportunity is really special for them.’

The front rows of the concert were filled with excited youngsters who shouted ‘We met Ed Sheeran, he high-fived us’.

While one soldier who got the opportunity to meet the star gushed to Cyprus Mail: ‘I can’t believe it. It means a lot that someone like him would take time to come and support us. We love you Ed.’
