We stepped into the office, our nerves palpable as we prepared to showcase our performance. Despite our anxiety, we were determined to make an impact. I remember Diddy, who was there, and he was someone I idolized. He had previously turned down my friend and me, and I couldn’t help but wonder how that meeting would unfold.
“Did he ever explain why he rejected you?” I asked. It was about two or three years ago when I was around 11 or 12 years old. At that time, I had been working with a fellow artist who was like a brother to me. We had similar songs, and we were eager to share our music.
When we arrived, Diddy was fantastic. We performed a song we created together, and I could feel the excitement bubbling inside me. It was thrilling to be in the same room with someone so influential. But then, I sensed the reality of the situation—Diddy didn’t want us. The sting of rejection hit hard. At that age, I felt like I was in the elevator, maybe even crying, wondering if I was good enough.
Despite the setback, I realized I needed to channel that disappointment into motivation. Diddy had become a driving force for me to strive harder. He was like a legendary coach in basketball, telling us to keep pushing, even if he didn’t believe we were ready yet.
I remembered being in that elevator, wrestling with feelings of inadequacy. As a child, you think anything is possible, but doubt started creeping in. Yet, that rejection ignited something in me. I felt determined to head back to the studio, to work harder, to create more songs, and to improve.
It seemed like Diddy was impressed with our passion. His presence was commanding, but I wondered if he would ever truly recognize our talent. Despite the challenges, I knew that I had to keep striving. The experience taught me resilience.
We had a conversation about skin color and perceptions in the industry, reflecting on how my friend and I fit into that narrative. There were moments that felt surreal, especially when I recalled how desperate Chris Brown appeared during a party, trying to escape a chaotic situation while Diddy was pulling him back in.
In the end, it was about more than just acceptance; it was about finding the strength to keep going despite the obstacles. I was determined to become a better artist, and I knew that I had to keep pushing myself to reach my dreams, no matter how daunting the journey might be.
