The secrets behind Connor Bedard’s focus as a young NHL player (Source: Imagn)
Chicago Blackhawks star forward Connor Bedard has explained how he stays focused despite being the centre of attention from the media and fans. He has scored seven points in six games this season, including a goal and six assists.
Bedard is averaging 20 minutes of ice time each game. Looking to prove his worth this year after a jaw fracture last season, Bedard is on course to score at least 96 points this season.
He has learnt to deal with the pressure that comes with popularity. Before the game against the Edmonton Oilers, Bedard looked focused on his performance. During the game, he did his best to manage the pressure and perform
“I’m not really thinking about it. If I hear something about myself, I don’t really care too much. Especially if it’s right before the game, I’m focused on what I’m doing”, he said after the game (via chicago.suntimes.com).
It was Bedard’s best game this season and that too against Connor McDavid. Bedard scored a goal and two assists for three points as he helped the Blackhawks win 5-2.
Connor Bedard has built a protective barrier to help him concentrate on what matters most: playing well.
“That’s a good thing about having a routine. You’re focused on whatever you’re doing next, and you’re not really thinking about anything else,” he added.
In his rookie season, Connor Bedard faced many challenges, including media obligations, but it wasn’t the scrutiny that upset him. Instead, he found interviews and promotional events tiring. False rumors about his family affected him more than any criticism of his game, but a close relationship with his parents helps him stay grounded.
Connor Bedard on balancing fame and teen life
As Connor Bedard starts his second season, his off-ice responsibilities have lessened a bit. This change has allowed him to open up more, but he’s still cautious. He acknowledges the oddity of being both a hockey star and a typical teenager.
“Your life is so busy and you’re so focused on what you’re doing, it’s almost harder to step back and look at it. I think I probably should — and will — here and there.
“Maybe after my first game (I did) a little, or after my first season. But you’re just in the flow of things, so not too much,” he said (via via chicago.suntimes.com).
The Blackhawks have won two of their six games, so fans expect them to perform better with Connor Bedard and Nick Foligno leading the charge.
