ESPN Insider shares speculation on LeBron James’ retirement (Credits: Imagn)
LA Lakers star LeBron James hasn’t shared his retirement plans yet, but many speculated it could be soon. For the 2024-25 NBA campaign, James is set to enter his 22nd season, which ties him with Vince Carter for the most seasons in league history. Surprisingly, ESPN’s Shams Charania said that fans might see the star play longer.
According to Charania, James isn’t planning on retiring anytime soon. The four-time champion is expected to play “at least” two more seasons, with the possibility of a third year beyond that.
“REPORT: LeBron James is expected to play ‘at least’ 2 more years in the NBA and potentially a 3rd, per Shams Charania,” Lakers Daily tweeted.
This season, he’s projected to still perform at his highest. Basketball Reference shared its 2024-25 season projection for the veteran star, expecting James to average 26.2 ppg, 7.5 rpg and 7.5 apg.
Over the summer, the Lakers star proved that he’s still got a lot left in the tank as he played for Team USA. James helped the national team win the Olympic gold medal in the 2024 Paris Games.
In late September, James said that he isn’t considering quitting the league just yet when questioned about his retirement plans, according to Lakers Nation.
“I haven’t thought about what the future holds, just kind of living in the moment,” James said. “Especially with Bronny being here, I don’t want to take this moment for granted. This is a moment I’ll enjoy maybe a little bit more.”
Mavs owner teases LeBron James to retire
Dallas Mavericks minority owner Mark Cuban joked about LeBron James’ long career when interviewed by TMZ Sports on Saturday.
“Yes, LeBron, it’s time for you to quit,” Cuban said. “I’m tired of you.”
“No, I’m bein’ serious, only ’cause he’s still so good. He’s on the Lakers. They’re our rivals, so, it’s time to retire, LeBron.”
As the Mavs’ owner, Cuban has seen James throughout the entirety of his career. The 20-time All-Star developed into one of the league’s best stars. The Dallas Mavericks went against the star forward in the NBA Finals in 2011.
