Mitch Marner and the Leafs are no closer to a resolution

Tuesday’s Mitch Marner update from Sportsnet’s Luke Fox is not one that we were all hoping for and it has led to some frustration amongst fans.

If you thought a summer of Mitch Marner talk was a lot, we are just weeks away from training camp where questions about his future will surely be the first ones asked when players and staff meet with the media ahead of opening day. That being said, Sportsnet’s Luke Fox provided an update on the situation in his “Leafs Mailbag” piece today and it isn’t exactly a ‘no news is good news’ report.

Fox was asked about seeing the best version of Marner under new head coach Craig Berube. He responded by saying the issue isn’t the regular season, but the playoffs like the rest of the “Core Four” and that his future is going to be decided by what happens next spring.

“What separates him is that his future compensation – and future uniform – will also be determined by how things go next spring. There is no sense today that Marner is willing to waive his no-move clause, nor any sense that Treliving is in a rush to extend him. We wait. We watch.”

Entering the final year of his 6-year contract that will pay him $10.9M, Marner is set to earn a hefty raise following the deal that Leon Draisaitl signed on Tuesday and the deal that William Nylander signed back in January. Until we are given a difinitive answer by the Leafs or Marner, the questions and frustration will persist.
