The Toronto Maple Leafs named superstar Auston Matthews as their 26th captain on Wednesday, replacing John Tavares, with Morgan Rielly, the longest-tenured Maple Leaf defenseman, saying that it was done with full support from the locker room.
At Matthews’ introductory press conference as captain, Rielly expressed admiration for how Tavares has handled the transition.
“I think when this came about there were some challenges for him, but, I think he’s handled everything like the class act that he is. I had a chance to speak with him, and the first thing that I felt was, how well he’s handling it.
“His view on things, as this has kinda come about, he’s been outstanding, but that’s no surprise to anyone,” Morgan Rielly said.
Tavares was named the captain in 2019 and led the team for the past five seasons. Rielly emphasized that Tavares has always put the team first as captain.
“I think it speaks volumes about who John is as a person and where his priorities lie. I think, for him, the only thing that really matters is our team and the results we’re able to get during the season and what’s best for our group.”
Morgan Rielly noted that Auston is fortunate to have his connection with Tavares and that the team benefits greatly from their collaboration.
